Advantages of helical gear reducer relative to spur gear

The disadvantage of spur gear reducers relative to helical gear reducers is that they generate vibration. Some variations in the involute profile may occur along the entire tooth surface at the same time, whether due to design, fabrication or deformation. This will result in a regular, one-to-one contact, which is often very intense. The resulting vibration causes both a large load on the gear and noise.

A further disadvantage of the spur gear reducer is that during the contact time, the additional strength sometimes obtained by the engagement of the two pairs of teeth cannot be utilized because the stress is limited by the condition of single tooth engagement in the cycle.

The helical gear reducer is different, and its helical gear can be seen as a cylindrical gear that is placed in a misaligned position by a set of thin-toothed gears, so that the contact of each piece is at different parts of the tooth profile, thereby compensating each thin plate. The effect of the gear error, this compensation is very effective for the elasticity of the gear teeth, and it is also advantageous in terms of load bearing strength.

Not only that, the manufacture and assembly of a large stack of spur gears is complicated, difficult and uneconomical, so the manufacturer manufactures gears that are connected in one piece and whose teeth are in the direction of the spiral. Although the helical gear is not like a spur gear, it can cause undesirable axial forces. However, the benefits in terms of vibration reduction and load bearing strength are far superior to those caused by axial thrust and a slight increase in manufacturing costs. Therefore, in the manufacture of the gear reducer, the helical gear is used instead of the spur gear.
