ZHAOWEI Driveline Comes To Foster Next-Gen 5G+VR/AR

With the advance of 5G commercial application, AR/VR, which had been in silence for a while, has come back to the public. 5G features large bandwidth and low latency, which can effectively solve VR’s pain points such as insufficient image rendering capacity, poor terminal mobility and interaction experience, and poor naturalness due to insufficient bandwidth and time extension. Ultra HD video, cloud games, VR/AR and other industries will become the first batch of applications. Medical and health care, industrial Internet and Internet of Vehicles have gradually become the pioneer fields of 5G application.

5G will lead to more application scenarios, increasing consumers’ reliance on AR/VR and raising higher requirements for devices. In order to reduce the sense of vertigo during wearing, the screen refresh rate has evolved from 60Hz to 90Hz and 120Hz, and the screen material has also evolved from LCD to OLED. In the future, more portable screen applications with better visual effects will increase the penetration rate of VR devices.

Good VR glasses need to be smaller, lighter and refresh at a higher rate so that they can bring a more real experience both in games and in use. Generally speaking, the face shape, as well as the position of five senses of each person, will be different, so good-quality VR glasses will at least have focal length adjustment. Only by adjusting the pupil distance and focal length to a reasonable position can the image accurately fall on the retina (especially the focal length) to obtain a clear view and reject the ghostly image.

VR headset driveline

In response to such a consumption demand, Shenzhen ZHAOWEI Machinery & Electronics Co., Ltd (hereinafter referred to as “ZHAOWEI“) has also upgraded the design of VR glasses (VR headset) driveline, which controls the distance between the lens and the screen by means of a planetary gearbox that dynamically zooms through the reciprocating linear motion of the miniature focusing motor.

Most of the existing VR glasses adopt intelligent multimedia playing terminals represented by smartphones as computing and display units, which are installed in the front of the glasses. In VR glasses, there are two sets of lens components corresponding to the user’s left eye and right eye respectively. Since the pupil distance between both eyes of different users is different, if the distance between the lens components keeps constant, it will inevitably cause some users to have difficulty in getting better experience when wearing VR glasses.

It is noteworthy that many manufacturers have released AR and VR glasses, including the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Sony PlayStation VR and Samsung Gear VR. In addition to intensify growth and development of AR and VR glasses, many manufacturers around the world have started the research and development of Optical Waveguide Technology, including start-ups like  DigiLens, as well as traditional optical giants like Sony. With the gradual participation of these enterprises, optical module research and development and AR component technology maturity will continue to improve, conducive to the development of the AR and VR industry.

TrendForce said that the AR/VR market will see rapid expansion in 2021 and 2022 as various brands begin participating in AR/VR development. Valuates Reports shows the Global Augmented Reality Market size is projected to reach USD 3664.5 Million by 2026, from USD 849 Million in 2019, at a CAGR of 27.6% during 2020-2026. It is also predicted that by 2022, the shipments of AR terminals will be close to 26.4 million units, and the growth rate of shipments during 2018-2022 will be about 146%, which is much faster than that of mobile phones and is expected to become the main terminal form of AR. This boosts the confidence of AR/ VR glasses market to a certain extent.

ZHAOWEI driveline for VR headset with IPD (interpupillary distance) adjustment adopts a reciprocating linear motion of the micro-focus motor to dynamically zoom and combines a telescopic gearbox in the lens to drive the eccentric wheel which makes spectacle frame (headset framework) produce vibration. The motor intelligently adjusts the distance between the two lens components of VR glasses by virtue of the gearbox structure for IPD (interpupillary distance) adjustment. When the user wears the glasses again, the built-in sensor will deliver the data to the electric power drive and convert the rotation motion of micro motor into the linear motion of the push rod. Thus, the front and rear two layers of VR glasses will be driven to be automatically focused according to the appropriate diopters of the user and the distance between the lens and the screen will be intelligently controlled to achieve the purpose of visual clear imaging.

ZHAOWEI virtual reality gear drive system makes it possible to obtain the moving track length and moving direction as the parameters for eye picture synchronization adjustment by the built-in sensor. This VR headset with IPD adjustment gearbox provides 2-stage, 3-stage, 4-stage transmission changes, which helps to change the gear ratio and adjust the input speed and torque according to transmission requirements of various stepper motors. It satisfies multi-stage stability requirement of intelligent transmission by means of driving modes. In addition, the modulus of the planetary gears is small. Under different environments with different humidity and temperature, the test shows that the rotor and the stepping motor inside the rotor enjoy long service life.

Look Ahead

VR/AR glasses or headsets are likely to become a replacement for smartphones as they become lighter, more portable and collaborative. At present, the whole VR/AR industry chain, including hardware, software, apps and services, is also being upgraded. Whoever solves the pain points of VR glasses will occupy the market. ZHAOWEI helps to realize its intelligent upgrades in the AR/VR microdrive system. According to the product requirements of AR/VR manufacturers, it can customize, design, develop and produce various types of micro gearboxes.

AR technology is human being-centered AI (artificial intelligence). By creating human-machine hybrid AI, AR technology can enhance people’s abilities from cognition, perception to execution. For example, infrared temperature measuring AR glasses can measure body temperature without contact. The current computing platform is a type of “smartphone/computer terminal + super APP+ cloud”, and in the future, it will turn to “AR glasses +AR super APP+ three-dimensional AR cloud”. The model based on “hardware + value-added services” is the development trend of the AR industry. AR will first be applied to ToB and ToG, and further to ToC. In this way, in the future, 5G+VR/AR will become the next generation of computing platforms, enabling the prosperity of multiple businesses!
